Fifteen people were arrested for drink and drug driving offences in Donegal during last week’s busy holiday week.
Thirteen of the arrests were made over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Gardaí reported a worrying rise in people caught under the influence of intoxicants on the roads. Eight people were detected drug driving. There were six drink driving arrests and one person was arrested for being intoxicated in charge of a vehicle.
Last week was one of the busiest weeks for travel in Donegal, as it marked the first Bank Holiday since Covid-19 travel restrictions were lifted nationwide.
Gardaí are continuing to appeal to people to be careful on the roads.
“We are out there. If you are drinking and driving or under the influence of drugs and driving, we are out there to get you,” warned Sergeant Eunan Walsh of the Letterkenny division.
In one case, a motorist in the Buncrana region was caught speeding and driving under the influence of cannabis. Gardaí stopped the motorist on Sunday evening after they were found to be travelling at a speed of 126KPH in a 100KPH zone on the N13. The motorist then tested positive for the presence of cannabis.
