GAEIL Mhaoil Ruadh (Mulroy Gaels), Donegal’s newest GAA team, goes into action for the first time next week.

Gaeil Mhaoil Ruadh will compete in Division 1 of the Northern Board Minor League.

The team is an amalgamation of players from the Downings and Gaeil Fhánada clubs.

They face Red Hughs at home next Wednesday, August 12, with an away game at Termon the following week. Gaeil Mhaoil Ruadh have a home game against St Eunan’s before traveling to take on Gaoth Dobhair.

There is a pointer to the past in the name of the amalgamated team.

A team under the Mulroy Gaels banner featured in the 1960s and the 1970s and actually played in the Donegal senior football championship in 1969, 1970 and 1977. The side was made up of Downings, Gaeil Fhánada and Milford.
