Second water burst strikes Inishowen

Another major water burst is affecting a large area of South Inishowen this Tuesday morning.

The burst was reported earlier in parts of Buncrana, Fahan, Tooban, Inch, Burnfoot, Bridgend, Burt, Killea, Newtowncunningham, Buncrana and surrounding areas.

Water supplies may be off for much of the day.

Irish Water has said that crews are working on repairs and works have an estimated completion time of 5pm this evening. Customers may not receive a full water supply for a further two to three hours while reservoirs refill and water returns to the network.

Kevin Love, Irish Water, explains further. “The burst was on a 6” main off the larger 400mm main which supplies this area. It isn’t as impactful as first thought due to its location on the smaller section of pipe. The main burst at 2am and Donegal County Council staff isolated the full section to maintain reservoir levels and aid quicker recovery following repair.

“The valve isolating the section that burst supplying customers in Gransha and Trillick townlands had been tarred over and couldn’t be located. It has now been located and isolated allowing the larger main to be turned back restoring supply to the majority of customers in South Inishowen and significantly reducing the number of people affected.”

It follows a major burst in the Malin area of Inishowen last night. Repairs on this water main are due to be completed by 3pm today.
