Five members of a boat crew were saved from Lough Swilly yesterday after their vessel became snagged on lobster pots.

Lough Swilly RNLI volunteers came to the aid of the small vessel just off Macamish, a fort near Knockalla on the western coastline of the lough.

The alarm was raised on Thursday evening, with the Lough Swilly Inshore lifeboat tasked to the scene at 7.12pm.

The crew helped free the boat and assisted the vessel and crew to the safety of Rathmullan pier.

The mission was a success, and the lifeboat returned to Ned’s Point to be refuelled and made ready for service again.

This local mission took place on the same day of a hugely successful rescue in Galway, when two cousins were saved from the water.

The young women survived 15 hours in the water after they were blown out to sea while paddleboarding. They endured a night at sea and were discovered by a local fisherman clinging to a lobster pot 17 miles from where they first went missing.

The women, aged 23 and 17, were brought for treatment in hospital in Galway but are both understood to be in good health.
