Minister of State at the Department of Justice and Equality with responsibility for Law Reform, Charlie McConalogue, has welcomed the opening of the Beef Finisher Payment Scheme.

The scheme is a once-off, exchequer-funded grant aid scheme under the Covid-19 State Aid Temporary Framework with funding totalling €50 million.

Minister McConalogue said: “The objective of BFP is to provide support for beef finishing farms in Ireland which have been severely impacted by the economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. The supports which are now open for application will provide a valuable income support for farmers who finished cattle from 1 February to 12 June 2020.

“A rate in the region of €100 per animal will be payable to farmers based on estimates of eligible animals.

“Beef farming is an important economic activity, with a significant multiplier effect in local rural communities, and I am aware on the negative impact COVID-19 has had on the farming community and therefore, I would urge farmers to avail of these supports now available.

“This scheme has been designed to make the application process as user-friendly and accessible as possible for farmers. Applications must be made online and the application window will remain open until 9 September with payments expected by November.”
