A new educational book for teachers has been published ahead of National Read a Book Day, 6th September.

Sarah Mullin (neé McBride) spent her summer holidays in Fanad editing her latest publication – ‘What They Didn’t Teach Me in Teaching College: a guide for early career teachers in Ireland’.

The critically acclaimed book features stories from inspirational educators across the globe with the aim of inspiring, supporting and even amusing aspiring student and early career teachers.

The author, Sarah Mullin, is a Deputy Headteacher in Birmingham who was recently named a ‘Rising Star in Education and Academia’ and received the ‘Contribution to Education of the Year’ award this year.

Sarah’s original book, What They Didn’t Teach Me on My PGCE, is a best seller and features on the recommended reading list for student teachers at many universities and teacher training programmes across the UK and Northern Ireland.

This year, she turned her focus to helping Irish teachers.

Miriam Colum, a lecturer in education from Marino Institute of Education, Associated College of Trinity College is currently working together with Sarah to launch a series of virtual educational conferences and events for student teachers in Ireland.

Miriam says: “Sarah Mullin’s book gives a voice to the actuality of becoming a teacher. What They Didn’t Teach Me in Teaching College is a collection of authentic life stories that highlight the journey into teaching. It offers insights into real experiences for potential students and future educators. This is a ‘must read’ for all, elucidating the reality of teaching in accessible and often hilarious ways. Keep it on your bookshelf to remind you that all will be okay in the end. This is the new best friend of Initial Teacher Education students, Newly Qualified Teachers, and long-term educators alike!

“This book is a little treasure trove of thoughtful insights for potential students and new teachers. Between the pages, you will learn the reality of applying for a teaching course, and the highs and lows of teacher training and finally having your own class! Through the lived experiences of former PGCE students and current educators, each page offers ideas to help you form a solid understanding of the teaching career.”

What They Didn’t Teach Me in Teaching College is available for sale on Amazon now.
