Too many people are wearing visors as an alternative to face coverings, Ireland’s Acting Chief Medical Officer has warned.
Dr Ronan Glynn has spoken out to say that face shields do not offer the same level of protection as masks.
The HSE has advised the public that visors are an acceptable alternative to face coverings, but Dr Glynn said this guidance was issued on the basis that it would be a small number of people who would need them as an alternative.
“The reality is that visors do not give the same level of protection as a face covering,” Dr Glynn said.
He has also called on people to try to improve how they wear masks: “Over 90% of people are now wearing them but unfortunately many are doing so inappropriately, such as over their chin, not covering their nose. We are seeing too many people wearing visors.”
Rachel Kenna, Chief Nursing Officer, Department of Health, added: “It is important that we remain alert to COVID-19. We know how to act, now it is time to refocus our efforts. Know how to wear a face covering appropriately and how to safely remove and dispose of it. Incorrect use of a face covering can increase your risk of infection. I would urge all families and households to watch the how-to guide on face coverings and practice safe use.”
