Govt say they are deadly serious about fines for people breaking 5k rule

The Government said they are very serious about fining people who travel more than 5k away from their homes without a valid excuse.

Legislation will be brought to Cabinet today on imposing fines on those in breach of new Level 5 regulations.

The fines will relate to the imposing of the 5km guideline for people to stay within a 5km limit of their homes for exercise.

Speaking with Claire Byrne Live last night, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly said that he is bringing legislation forward tomorrow – but cannot “preempt” what decision will be made.

Minister Donnelly said: “I’m bringing legislation to Cabinet tomorrow for discussion, I can’t preempt what Government will say or decide.

“But yes, there is legislation going to Cabinet to that effect.”

While the 5km travel limit will remain in place for the duration of the six-week lockdown – there are exceptions such as travel to work, school and medical appointments.

For vital family reasons, such as providing care to children, elderly or vulnerable people, and in particular for those who live alone, as part of an extended household but excluding social family visits

People will also be allowed to leave their 5km bubble to visit graves.
