A 17-year-old teenager from Derry has been recorded as Northern Ireland’s youngest Covid-19 victim.
Aaron Doherty, from the Creggan area, is being remembered by his heartbroken family as a much-loved and happy child.
He passed away at Altnagelvin Hospital on Tuesday, having contracted the virus in September. His family told the Derry News he had contracted Covid last month but he ‘had beaten it’ after he tested negative last week.
However, Aaron, who had underlying health issues, took ill on Monday and was admitted to hospital, where he suffered heart failure. The Department of Health includes anyone who had died within 28 days of receiving a positive test for Covid-19 as a coronavirus-related death.
Aaron was yesterday recorded the first coronavirus-related death of someone under the age of 20 in Northern Ireland.
The Department of Health in NI today reports that eight more people have died with Covid-19 in the past day. There are a further 822 new cases, including 86 in the Derry City/Strabane council area.
