An urgent appeal is calling on residents in the Whitethorn estates of Letterkenny to check their oil tanks as the council attempts to solve the mystery of a suspected leak in the area.
A smell of oil has been reported in recent days in the vicinity of the pedestrian alleyway linking Letterkenny Town Park and Whitethorn Close.
The local council’s environment department are investigating the matter and have carried out checks on the hospital and nearby commercial buildings. It is believed to be a domestic heating oil leak, however, due to the complexity of the drainage system, it has been difficult to identify the source.
A leaflet drop has also taken place to ask residents in local housing areas to check their own tanks for leaks.
Residents in the Whitethorn estates and surrounding areas are being asked to check their oil tanks as soon as possible, and if they do discover a leak on their property, to make contact with the council.
