A regular maintenance programme is being sought to clear grass from the greenway from Coolboy to Kilmacrennan.
The path, which runs alongside the N56, is used regularly by walkers and cyclists.
However, problems have emerged with overgrowing grass.
Local Councillor Michael McBride brought the issue to the Letterkenny-Milford MD this week, where he called for a grass cutting programme to keep the path clear
Cllr McBride told the council that grass has has started to grow on to the tar and there are fears it will eventually narrow the path so walkers and cyclers cannot be accommodated together.
In response, the council said there is limited funding available for the maintenance of verges on the National Roads. The request is set to be forwarded to the TII to provide funding to carry out the maintenance work.
