Busy crossing is an ‘accident waiting to happen’ – Cllr Kelly

Fresh solutions are being sought to make pedestrian crossing safer at a busy area of Lower Main Street Letterkenny.

The crossing at Kiernan’s Spar was the topic of a motion brought to the Letterkenny-Milford MD by Cllr Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly this week.

Cllr Kelly called on the council to put a pedestrian crossing in front of the shop which is situated at the bottom of the Convent Road.

However, the response from the council said a signalised crossing at this junction would be “problematic at peak traffic volume” due to the close proximity of the Back Road and the Mini Roundabouts.

“It may be problematic, to be honest I think it is a problem as it is,” Cllr Kelly responded.

He added that the high volume of traffic in the area presents a risk to pedestrians, which could be solved by a controlled crossing or other traffic calming measures.

“I’m aware there is a stop and go in place here for school hours, but with the amount of pedestrians crossing at this section, I think this should be put in place.

“Whether there is a speed ramp or pedestrian crossing put in place with lights, it would slow that traffic down.”

“I think this location is an accident waiting to happen and I really hope this is looked in to,” Cllr Kelly said.
