Young Donegal man to stand trial on rape charge

A DONEGAL man, aged in his 20s, is to stand trial accused of raping a woman.

A book of evidence has been served served on the man, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

He is charged with one count of rape and is also charged with sexual assault

The offences are alleged to have occurred at an address in Donegal in 2018.

The accused man did not speak during a brief hearing before Judge Paul Kelly at Letterkenny District Court this week.

Gardai gave evidence of serving a book of evidence.

The Director of Public Prosecution has consented to the man being returned for trial at the next sitting of the Central Criminal Court.

Judge Kelly gave the man the alibi warning, meaning that he must provide to the State within 14 days details of any alibi he intends to rely on during the trial.

A section 56 order, relating to videotapes of interviews, was granted and a publication order, required in order to protect the identity of the alleged victim in the case, is in place.

Judge Kelly assigned solicitor Mr Frank Dorrian and granted two legal counsel for the trial.
