Restaurants and gastro pubs are set to swing open their doors on December 7th for the Christmas period.

The Government discussed the issues surrounding restrictions for more than five hours today.

It is also understood that the Government will discuss proposals for inter-county travel from December 18th.

This will remain in place until January 3rd when it will be reviewed.

People will be allowed to attend mass with strict rules around choirs, under another proposal to be considered by the Cabinet.

The Government had been warned by NPHET of the risks of reopening the hospitality sector, but the move is expected to get the green light from Cabinet.

An opening date of December 7th will allow for three busy weekends for restaurants and bars serving food over the Christmas period.

From Wednesday next, all shops and hairdressers can open and people will be able to travel within their county.

People will also be able to attend religious services in December but there will be safety measures in place for choirs.
