There is widespread sadness across Donegal following the passing of the county’s oldest person, Kitty Byrne.

Mrs Byrne, who was from Cashel in Kilcar, was in her 107th year.

She went to Coguish National School and later worked on the family farm before meeting a marrying her late husband Francis (Francie) Byrne.

The couple had four children, two boys and two girls.

They also had 18 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, many of whom gathered with Kitty at the Harbour Lights Nursing Home in Killybegs for her 100th birthday.

Mrs Byrne never drank or smoke and up until her 105th year was in perfect health until she suffered an unfortunate fall.

Along with her husband Francie, the couple enjoyed a love of music and people would regularly gather in their house of music sessions.

Her remains will be arriving at her home on Friday at noon.

Removal will be from her home on Saturday for her funeral mass in St Cartha’s Church, Kilcar at noon.

May she rest in peace.
