It is with great excitement that we can exclusively reveal that the popular Number 6 coffee shop in Letterkenny is joining forces with the Tank & Skinny’s team. The cafe, located in the Courtyard Shopping Centre is celebrating 10 years in business this year with the launch of a fabulous new look.

The T&S vibe that is popular in the Inishowen cafes is now felt in Letterkenny too, under the management of Peter Doherty, renowned local footballer (Tank & Skinny’s brother).

Doherty has has been the manager of Number 6 for over five years, working his way up the ranks from being a dish washer at 14!

The team behind Number 6 Sandwich & Coffee Shop

Number 6 started out as a result of the recession crash. Shane Doherty, a carpenter in Dublin, headed for the Hills and, after much soul searching and even getting an Australian visa, he decided to stay and open a coffee shop – with no experience in this area.

Number 6 soon became a firm local favourite and people began to comment on the friendly service and consistent fresh funky food.

His brother Edward was also part of the opening and worked in Number 6 in the early years.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our past and present staff for making number six the heart of Letterkenny,” said the team.

Shane comments that he has been “blessed with great staff throughout the years.”

The new-look Number 6 Sandwich & Coffee Shop in Letterkenny

In 2016, Shane and Edward teamed up to open Tank & Skinny’s Muff with its own bakery. On numerous occasions they were told they must have been “Crazy” to open in a the small border village of Muff, but they persevered and turned an empty shell into a fashionable coffee shop. The cafe was built in just four weeks, in time for opening for the Muff Festival, and has been thriving ever since, thanks to the support of the local community who really took the boys in as one of their own. Shane and his father Des’ carpentry skills were instrumental to getting the unique interior complete and they received a lot of help from family and friends.

Two years later, Tank & Skinny’s Seaside was born in Buncrana – blessed with unspoiled views of Lough Swilly. The bakery was moved here which now services all three shops.

All shops remain open for takeaway during the current Level Five restrictions. The new Bamboo app (click here to order) is very popular with customers who can order and pay through the app so their goods are ready for pick-up when they visit.

Its been a strange and challenging year for everybody but Shane, Edward, Peter and their teams are confident that they will emerge stronger than ever and have very big plans for the years ahead.

Shane would like to take this opportunity to thank Letterkenny and its wonderful people for their continued support over the years and patience in the early years while he was finding his feet.

”We as a team are always striving to improve and evolve our product to give the customers the best experience we can.

“The friends, colleagues and acquaintances I made during the last ten years in Letterkenny have been invaluable and I look forward to this exciting next chapter,” Shane said.
