TRIBUTES have poured in following the death of Michael Crossan, whose funeral takes place in Letterkenny on Monday.
Michael, a native of Cootehill in County Cavan, made his home in Letterkenny and he was entrenched in the community.
A former member of the Defence Forces, Michael went on to become involved in the Irish United Nations Veterans’ Association.
He is perhaps best remember for his work with the Donegal Community Games. He served for many years as the organisation’s PRO.
The national Community Games President, Gerry McDermott led the tributes.
“Michael was a highly committed, valuable and active member of Community Games to this day,” he said.
“He first got involved in Letterkenny in 1979 when his own children were taking part and became a major force in promoting the games in his Area and his County of Donegal having held numerous positions from Chairman to PRO.
“Michael was responsible for securing excellent sponsorships for Donegal and as PRO he always ensured lots of coverage for Donegal Community Games. This work seen him win many well deserved National Media awards throughout the years.
“Michael will be sorely missed by all.”
In 2017, Michael won the National Media Award at the Community Games Awards; a fitting honour for his trojan work.
Bonagee United Football Club paid tribute to Michael, who they said had been a ‘founding and influential member of the Lurgybrack Schoolboys for many years’.
He is survived by his wife Mary and family Seán, Michael Paul, Helena Sheridan, Brian, Ann Marie McDevitt and Karol, grandchildren, brother Donal and sisters Mary Sweeney, Ann Hogan and Helen Murray.
Michael, late of Correnagh, Letterkenny, will be laid to rest in New Leck Cemetery following Requiem Mass at the Church of the Irish Martyrs, Letterkenny at 11am on Monday.
