Judge said vicious attack on young boxer wasn’t a “one punch affair”

A man who viciously assaulted a young boxer preventing him from going to America for a tournament has paid his victim €1,000 in compensation.

The young athlete, who was just 16 years old, had both his jaw and nose broken as well as facial injuries, when attacked in the Lagoon Bar in Termon.

One of his two attackers, Dean Hanlon, appeared at Letterkenny District Court, where he was due to pay his victim the balance of the compensation he owed his victim.

Judge Paul Kelly said he remembered the attack which occurred on the evening of December 20th, 2014.

He added that it certainly wasn’t a “one punch affair.”

“This was a very serious assault on a much younger boy who had to have other operations, It wasn’t a one punch affair. There were a few punches to the head and he should be thoroughly ashamed of himself,” he said.

Solicitor Patsy Gallagher said the incident happened during what was an extended family night out.

He said his client now had the balance of the compensation but that he was now off from work until the New Year because of an injury.

Judge Kelly again mentioned the fact that the boy had to miss out on boxing for Ulster and also the injuries he received adding “One thousand euro is a paltry sum in that regard.”

He adjourned the case until February 17th for a probation report for Hanlon of Dooen, Newmills.
