Donegal woman with 168 convictions jailed for cosmetics theft

A DONEGAL woman with 168 previous convictions has been sentenced to six months in prison after stealing over €1,300 worth of cosmetics. 

Elizabeth Crumlish (44), with an address in Ballybofey, was before Letterkenny District Court charged with two counts of theft and also two charges contrary to the road traffic act.

The court heard that on April 24, 2019, Crumlish stole cosmetics to the value of €1,367 from McElhinney’s Stores in Ballybofey.

Judge Paul Kelly was told that the theft involved ‘high end creams’. When arrested, Crumlish was found to be in possession of a umber of items which were not suitable for re-sale.

Crumlish was further charged with the theft of socks, to the value of €40, from McElhinney’s Stores on August 15, 2019.

On January 21, 2020, Gardaí observed Crumlish driving a blue Nissan Micra. Gardaí knew Crumlish to have been disqualified and she was arrested and charged.

Three months beforehand, she was disqualified for a period of ten years at Longford Circuit Court

The court was told that Crumlish had a total of 168 previous convictions.

Defence solicitor Rory O’Brien said his client was a victim of a serious accident which had ‘a material impact on her overall wellbeing.

Mr O’Brien said Crumlish needed to be provided with the appropriate medication in the Dóchas Centre and told his client that she would have to mend her ways.

For the theft on April 24, Judge Paul Kelly sentenced Crumlish to two months imprisonment. For the August 15 theft, committed while she was on bail for the previous matter, Crumlish was given a two-months prison term, the sentence to run consecutively.

An additional two-month sentence, to run consecutive, was imposed for driving while disqualified. Judge Kelly banned Crumlish from driving for another five years.

The no insurance matter was marked taken into consideration. Recognisance was fixed on Crumlish’s own bond of €400.
