January 20, 2021

A juvenile has appeared at a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court this evening charged with a range of offences including four burglaries.

The 16-year-old, who cannot be named, was arrested this morning at an apartment in Letterkenny.

He is charged with a range of offences including breaking into Kentucky Fried Chicken, SoLo Store, The Yellow Pepper restaurant and Stateside restaurant, all in Letterkenny.

He is also charged with being intoxicated on two occasions, engaging in threatening and insulting behaviour and breaking a window at Bookmark in the Courtyard Shopping Centre.

Garda Patrick McDermott told the court that he arrested the youth at 10.46am this morning on suspicion of a number of offences.

He was taken to Letterkenny Garda station for questioning and was charged with nine offences.

The boy, who wore a black tracksuit, was accompanied to court by his mother.

Garda Sgt Jim Collins said that Gardai were not objecting to bail but wanted a number of “strict conditions.”

These include that he stay out of all retail parks in Letterkenny and also all retail outlets on Letterkenny’s Main Street.

He is also to remain sober and substance-free and that his parents have to be contactable by mobile phone at all times.

Gardai also asked that a curfew be imposed on that boy that he is to remain at home between the hours of 8pm and 8am.

Solicitor for the accused, Mr Rory O’Brien, said he had spoken to Gardai and to his client about the conditions and they were all agreed.

Judge Paul Kelly asked if there were directions in the case and Sgt Collins said the matters would be referred to the Director of Public Prosecution.

Judge Kelly asked the boy if he understood all the conditions of his bail and the boy replied that he did.

He also warned the boy that if he broke any of his bail conditions that he would have his bail revoked and that he will go into custody.

The case was adjourned until March.
