Jobs blow as Letterkenny store plans closure

The Letterkenny branch of UK retailer Halfords is set to close.

Staff at Donegal’s only store in Forte Lynne Retail Park were notified of the plans in recent days.

The firm, which sells car and cycling parts, is carrying out a slew of shut downs across the UK and Ireland. Around 10% of its 843 branches are to close before April 2021 as part of consolidation efforts. The impact of Covid-19 on retail and Brexit have been identified as the top risks and reasons for store closures.

Halfords, which operates as an essential retailer, employs around 10,000 people in stores and garages across the UK and Ireland.

Despite being boosted by festive sales, the company is in a bid to save £6m a year.

In a statement, the company said it is aiming to offer Donegal staff alternative opportunities elsewhere: “We are working hard to support all of those affected and are hopeful of being able to offer those colleagues one of a wide range of new service-orientated roles at alternative locations.”
