Donegal County Council is being asked to urgently review the county gritting programme to ensure more roads are treated each winter.
County Councillor Ciaran Brogan has suggested that the council should engage with private contractors and farmers to expand gritting routes across the county.
Raising the matter at the January council meeting, Cllr Brogan said the gritting programme has been a cause for concern for a number of years. He called for support for a plan to seek expressions of interest from the private sector to carry out gritting and suggested that farmers could also be engaged to grit networks that are not on the programme.
Cllr Brogan added that the issue was not just a rural matter, but roads in Letterkenny are not being covered that would have been treated in the town council administration.
A council workshop has now been scheduled for February to discuss options for altering the winter maintenance programme.
