Donegal Daily’s new feature series with Letterkenny Institute of Technology continues as we hear the stories of current students and their experiences on LYIT’s many courses in the run-up to the CAO deadline on February 1st.

Ciaran Haden is a fourth-year student in the Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Electronic Engineering with Embedded Systems at Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT). A former student of St. Columba’s College, Stranorlar, Ciaran completed his Leaving Certificate in 2017. He chose to study Electronic Engineering at LYIT following a visit to the campus for Open Day 2016. When making his CAO choices, Ciaran considered a number of options including Civil Engineering and Computer Science and made the decision to choose Electronic Engineering following his visit to the LYIT campus.

Now a fourth-year student at LYIT, Ciaran has thoroughly enjoyed his time at LYIT.

As a Donegal based student, he has really enjoyed having the comfort of home combined with a top-class education on his doorstep.

Ciaran commented, “In my first few weeks at LYIT, I found it so easy to settle in, I didn’t have the stress of trying to find accommodation, I was straight into my programme and embracing the college experience. What I found most interesting about studying Electronic Engineering at LYIT is that during first and second year, LYIT Engineering programmes allow you to sample a broad range of engineering disciplines. I covered modules in Mechanical Engineering, as well as Electronic Engineering based modules, LYIT is always getting you ready for the world of work in their programmes.”

Ciaran busy working on his projects

Ciaran was excited when joining third and fourth year of the BEng (Hons) programme because it is during third and fourth year of the programme that you bring together all the skills and expertise learnt in first and second year into your project work. Ciaran added, “Right now, I am developing a ‘An embedded Linux-based people counting network’ that monitors the number of people in a room. Covid-19 has had a massive impact on the number of people that can gather together in confined spaces. I am building a network, using blue tooth technology, that tracks the number of people in a room. This data will then be sent to a hub and can be used by organisations and industries everywhere to digitally monitor the number of people in a room/building. My programme of study at LYIT has enabled me to develop this type of technology and it is so exciting to explore.”

Graduation Day for Ciaran

Ciaran further added, “I have also really enjoyed student life at LYIT, there are lots of clubs and societies to join, there is something for everyone at LYIT. What is different about LYIT is that you build relationships at LYIT, relationships with peers and also, strong relationships with your lecturers, other larger universities can be isolating, I see that with my friends. In the Engineering Department at LYIT, I am blown away by the level of support you get as a student.”

If Ciaran had the chance to return to St. Columba’s College, Stranorlar to speak with the Leaving Certificate Class of 2021 he would tell them, “You get everything you need at LYIT, you’ll work with the latest emerging technologies and you’ll be supported by your lecturers and peers along the way. You’ll leave LYIT with skills and expertise that set you apart because the practical nature of the programme readies you for the world of work.”

If Ciaran had to describe his time at LYIT, he added, “I have seen personal growth during my time at LYIT, my confidence has grown so much and I have also experienced intellectual growth. I have had a brilliant third-level experience and LYIT helps you to develop as a person, it has been amazing.”
