Donegal Daily’s new feature series with Letterkenny Institute of Technology continues as we hear the stories of current students and their experiences on LYIT’s many courses in the run-up to the CAO deadline on February 1st.

Jamie Bell is a fourth-year student in the Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Marketing at Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT).

Jamie, a former student of St.Columba’s College, Stranorlar, completed his Leaving Certificate in 2017. When Jamie was making his CAO choices, he knew that Business at LYIT was going to be his first choice.

The first two years of the Business programme at LYIT provides students with the opportunity to sample all aspects of Business, students explore a number of core business areas before choosing a degree award specialism.

In the first two years of the programme, Jamie particularly enjoyed the ‘Digital Marketing’ and ‘Statistics’ modules.

Jamie said: “I didn’t think I was going to enjoy ‘Statistics’ and it is now one of my favourite modules. I found ‘Digital Marketing’ interesting and engaging, I am of a generation that has never known a time without digital media and I really enjoyed exploring the social media component of this module.

“It was actually this module that helped me to choose my degree award specialism in Marketing. In third year, I really enjoyed studying ‘Consumer Psychology’, it was fascinating to explore human behaviour and to understand consumer decision making.”

LYIT’s Department of Business Studies recently introduced a new CAO programme in Marketing, the Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Marketing with Online Technologies (CAO Code: LY128).

This level 8 honours degree programme is now available on the CAO. The aim of this programme is to equip learners with the capabilities to excel in the dynamic and global marketing environment by developing marketing graduates who are innovative in their approach and have the capacity to act as catalysts for growth in organisations.

The new programme includes modules such as social media marketing, digital marketing, digital business, brand engagement marketing and it also, includes an optional one-year work placement.

Jamie has enjoyed all aspects of college life at LYIT. As a Sports Scholarship award winner in 2019, and again in 2020, Jamie has had the opportunity to represent LYIT’s men’s soccer team at the highest level in intervarsity competitions.

Being part of the LYIT soccer team supported Jamie’s transition from second level to third level education and provided him with the opportunity to travel around Ireland on behalf of the LYIT team.

Jamie said: “Being able to study at home, play for the LYIT men’s soccer team and receive two scholarship awards has really enhanced my student experience. During my time at LYIT, I have represented the LYIT team across Ireland from Dublin to Galway, Limerick to Cork, it really has been the best experience.”

Jamie added: “Don’t overlook LYIT when making your CAO choices. I know when you are doing your Leaving Certificate you think that farther hills look greener, but I would say to students making their CAO choices to consider LYIT in your CAO options.

“I can honestly say that the Business programme at LYIT is delivered at the highest standard, your lecturers at LYIT are always available and accessible, and you can always ask for support. It really is what sets LYIT apart from other colleges and universities.

“ My time at LYIT has been brilliant, I have thoroughly enjoyed my Business and Marketing degree and also, my student experience. I have no regrets choosing LYIT.”

LYIT’s Department of Business Studies offers a wide and varied range of Level 6/7 and Level 8 CAO programmes.
