A man has appeared in court charged with demanding €50,000 from a woman after claiming he was from the IRA.

Kevin McAuley appeared at Letterkenny Circuit Court charged with demanding the money from an Angela McDaid.

The court was told that on a date between 31st of October and November 2nd, 2019, he demanded money with menaces.

The demand was made in a letter to Ms McDaid.

In the letter, Ms McDaid was told to place €50,000 in a yellow bag and that failure to do so would have repercussions.

McAuley, of Drumdoit, Castlefin, Co Donegal spoke only to plead guilty to the charge.

Barrister for McCauley, Mr Shane Costelloe, SC, said that his client had no previous convictions and had never been in trouble before.

He added that his client wanted to put his “best foot forward” and asked Judge John Aylmer for more time for the preparation of a probation and welfare report.

Judge Aylmer agreed and adjourned the case for sentencing to the July sessions of the court.
