Safety concerns over children having to ‘stand in a ditch’ on busy road

SCHOOLCHILDREN crossing a busy road on the outskirts of Letterkenny are in danger due to a lack of safety measures.

Councillor Jimmy Kavanagh has called on Donegal County Council to explore options for the exits from Loughnagin and Golf Course roads onto the Ramelton road.

“Schoolchildren here have to stand on a corner to wait on busses and after they get off busses in the evening,” Cllr Kavanagh told the monthly Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District meeting.

“A bus shelter would be a good idea. They’re standing in a ditch now, a crowd of young people and with the general pushing and shoving that goes on, it’s a danger.

“You can have bad conditions, dark mornings, evening and so on and it is dangerous there.

“They are standing on a bend with a lot of traffic coming behind.”

Cllr Kavanagh said a lack of signage is contributing to the potential dangers.

He added: We’re confined in terms of space, but there is no warning about children crossing. A job could be done on lining the road and erecting signage.”

The motion was seconded by Cllr Gerry McMonagle.

A road safety engineer from Donegal County Council will carry out a safety assessment at the locations.
