A man attacked his ex-girlfriend after she made remarks up to the window of his apartment as she and two friends were walking by.

Ryan McMenamin appeared at Letterkenny District Court where he was charged with assaulting a Ms. Murray.

The court heard that at 5.30pm on August 23rd, 2018 at Lower Main Street in Letterkenny, the accused attacked Ms Murray.

Gardai said the 25-year-old attacked Ms Murray and two friends from behind.

He kicked her and punched her leaving her with scrapes to her nose and a bump to the back of her head.

The court was told that McMenamin then ran from the scene and that the entire attack was captured on CCTV.

Ms Murray did not require medical treatment but pictures of her injuries were handed into court.

Solicitor for the accused, Mr Kieran Dillon, said his client had been drinking and heard some comments from outside and reacted.

He confronted Ms Murray and things escalated which he said he now regrets and apologised to his victim.

Mr Dillon said he pair had got back together again since the incident but had again split up.

He added that his client suffers from anxiety, is very apologetic for what happened and is planning to return to education.

Judge Paul Kelly said he was going to ask the Probation Services to intervene and adjourned the case until May.

He said he also wanted to see if there was a way forward through a restorative justice process and to hear if the accused had proposals for compensation for his victim.
