Popular Letterkenny bar to get the brush-off from artists

The Letterkenny-based art group The A-rt Team, are calling on local artists to get in contact in designing murals in various spaces in Letterkenny town centre.

The first location chosen is the gable end wall of McGinleys Bar at Lower Main Street.

Artists can contact the A-rt Team through their Facebook page or email at thea.rtteam@yahoo.com.

Each artist is required to submit their own previous artworks, what their proposed design will be and the estimated price.

Artists not experienced or equipped in working at such a scale are still eligible to apply. The local art group will supply the additional service if required.

Chairperson, John Muldowney said: “The A-rt team was formed by Finnian O Donnell in January 2021 to explore the possibility of creating public murals on the various wall spaces in Letterkenny, with the twin benefit of making the town a more beautiful place and generating some paid work for artists.”

Committee Treasurer, Finn O Donnell said: “We are looking for the artist who wants to showcase their work and promote themselves and what better way than to have their work in the town centre for everyone to see.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for artists to gain paid work and gain notoriety, for local business owners to have a unique art piece at their premises and for the local tourist industry to use this as an attraction to the town.”

The group have stated that the gable end of Mcginley’s does not need to be themed in any way and that they wish to see the true artists expression with their design.

“Art for the sake of art,” said committee member Steven Crane. “There is a vast array of talent in this town alone and a severe lack of platforms for them. The need is there, the support from the public is definitely there. It’s a sort of build it and they come scenario. We are laying the groundwork and it can only grow from there.”
