Gardai busted a ‘shebeen’ in Inishowen ten days ago and issued fines to five men for breaching covid-19 regulations.

Inspector Shaun Grant is warning that such illegal drinking dens cannot be tolerated during the ongoing health emergency.

He explained how Gardai received information that a number of people had gathered in the Burnfoot area, and had been drinking in a shed near a private residence on the afternoon of Sunday, February 28.

“We had reason to call to this location, where we discovered a small bar with heaters and a seating area. It was obvious that a number of freshly poured drinks had been abandoned.”

“Gardai investigated further and found four males hiding in the back of a nearby Transit van,” he said in this morning’s Inishowen Independent newspaper.

Each of the males was subsequently issued with a fixed charge penalty notice of €100, while the owner of the premises was issued with a €500 fine for organising an event in a dwelling.

Meanwhile in a separate incident, twelve young men were fined after Gardai raided a house party in Buncrana on Saturday night.

A number of males had been observed bringing alcohol into the property at Railway Road and Gardai attended the scene shortly before 10.30pm
