A trainee Garda was arrested in Donegal Town on suspicion of drug driving.

The officer is not understood to be based in Donegal Town but is based in the general Co Donegal region.

Reports suggest the Garda had attended a house party which is a clear breach of Covid regulations.

The Garda was stopped at the checkpoint shortly after midnight on Friday last.

THere was then a follow-up search of a property where another trainee officer was found.

It is understood that cocaine was found at the party which was taking place in the property.

A spokesperson for the Garda Press office told Donegal Daily that two trainee officers have now been suspended.

“A member of An Garda Síochána was arrested on the 19 March 2021 in Donegal Town on suspicion of Driving under the Influence of an Intoxicant.

“A sample has been forwarded for the Medical Bureau of Road Safety. Subsequently, Gardaí searched a domestic residence in Donegal Town.

“Two members of An Garda Síochána, both probationers based in the wider North West Region, have been suspended.”
