Young bakers enjoy exciting course through Refugee Resettlement Programme

Twenty-three children from Donegal Local Development CLG’s (DLDC) Refugee Resettlement Programme have just completed a 6 week baking programme from the comfort of their own homes.

The programme was facilitated by Ciara Cronin from the Refugee Resettlement Programme via ZOOM. The children and families that participated came from locations throughout Donegal including Inishowen, Letterkenny & Donegal Town.

Ciara, who is Project Co-Ordinator said: “We wanted to give children and families on the programme the opportunity to learn new skills while having fun together. To ensure that every child had all of the materials needed to participate we delivered free materials and baking packs to each door. The packs included aprons, oven gloves, sieve, cookie cutters, mixing bowl, wooden spoon, timer & folder. Furthermore, all of the ingredients were delivered weekly to every child along with recipes and worksheets.”

The children along with their parents followed the recipes and made delicious traditional Irish food each week, including sugar-free recipes to accommodate diabetics.

Every Saturday afternoon the children participated in a zoom call with Ciara to talk about what they made, how they followed the recipe, their likes/dislikes and their overall baking experience.

At the end of the programme every child received a certificate for being an awesome baker and their very own baking book.

Ciara stated ”I thoroughly enjoyed this programme, probably as much as the children did! I really looked forward to a Saturday afternoon to see all their excited faces on Zoom and to talk about what they made. I want to thank all the children for participating in the programme and a special thank you to every parent who took the time out each week to supervise the baking and for capturing their child’s experience through videos and photos. It was an excellent programme with wonderful participants.”

The programme was funded by Healthy Ireland in partnership with the Children and Young People’s Services Committees (CYPSC).
