Councillor received ‘threatening letter’ from local community group

A councillor has claimed he was sent a ‘threatening letter’ from a local community group over a failed grant application.

Cllr Frank McBrearty made the claim at today’s Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District (MD) meeting.

Declining to name the group, the Raphoe-based representative said they wrote to him because they were overlooked for a €20,000 Donegal County Council grant.

“There is a serious issue here,” Cllr McBrearty said.

“We only have so much money to give out. There was only €20,000 from each councillor to give out. This group was entitled to apply, but I’m not afraid to say that other groups were more entitled to money than they were.”

He added that ‘I’m not frightened to name them’ but decided not to do so.

“I’ve done my best in the last 12 years. I don’t appreciate people sending me threatening letters. I’ll not name them, but they know who they are. They can phone me and I’ll challenge them,” he concluded.
