The issue of drug-driving has become a huge cause of concern for Gardai in Donegal according to the latest statistics.
The latest Garda figures for the county for the first four months of the year show another major increase in those being arrested for being under the influence behind the wheel.
Across the county up until May 4th, a total of 92 people were arrested for drug-driving compared to 68 for the same period last year.
This feeds into an overall rise in the trend for people being arrested for drug-driving.
That rise comes despite the fact that there has been less traffic on our roads because of the Covid pandemic.
Donegal Gardai have responded to that rise.
Additional drug testing units and checkpoints have been set up and are continuing to operate in both Letterkenny and West Donegal.
A rise in drug-driving cases is coming before the courts locally to be dealt with.
A meeting of the Joint Policing Committee heard that the matter of rising drug-driving levels is “receiving focus” from Gardai in the county.
