Gardai in Donegal’s border stations are to be given specialist training in the use of ‘stinger’ devices.
The issue was raised by Joint Policing Committee board member and former Garda Sergeant James Trearty.
It follows an incident in Muff recently when a Garda pursuit resulted in the arrest of a man for alleged dangerous driving.
However, dashcam footage circulated widely on social media showed how close the incident came to injury or the loss of life.
Mr Trearty said “I’d like to see it go out that all Garda members especially those in close proximity to the border would be trained and be proficient in the use of the stinger equipment.
“That would be all members within close proximity to the border with Northern Ireland could have training in the use of the stinger.”
Garda Superintendent Goretti Sheridan “There is a shortage of training at the minute primarily because of Covid and everything has stopped.
“But things are getting up and running again and hopefully car courses are coming on the horizon so we’ll get our staff trained up again,” she said.
