Leaving Cert students at Letterkenny school sent home after ‘water fight’

All final year students of a Letterkenny girls school have been ordered to stay home for their last two days after a small group engaged in a water fight.

The alleged incident took place outside the Loreto Letterkenny school building yesterday, prompting swift disciplinary action by the school due to Covid concerns.

Principal Sr Gerardine Mullen told all Leaving Certs that yesterday would be their final day, instead of Friday, due to the behaviour of the pupils involved. Some students were also suspended.

The announcement was made during the final class of the day.

Some parents have criticised the punishment for its impact on every pupil in their final week of school.

“The girls had no time to say a proper goodbye to the school and it is just very disheartening,” a parent told Donegal Daily.

“These girls have worked hard in difficult circumstances and deserve better than to be treated like this. To say I am disgusted, hurt and angry on behalf of my daughter and her peers is an understatement. The upset and distress in the Cathedral car park today was incredibly difficult to watch,” said another parent.

The school issued a message by text to parents yesterday evening saying the decision was made following a “worrying incident”.

“This decision was made to ensure adherence to Covid guidelines and the safe running of the LC exams,” the school said.

“We wish your daughter(s) the very best in their forthcoming exams.”
