The Buncrana Roads Policing Unit (RPU) detected a driver who was travelling in excess of the 100Kph speed limit this morning.
The motorist was clocked doing 125Kph.
Yesterday the Buncrana RPU also detected two drivers travelling at well over the recommended speed limit.
One motorist was detected travelling at 128Kph (79.53 Mph) in a 80Kph (50Mph) zone and another travelling at 96Kph (59.65Mph) in a 60Kph (37Mph) zone.
“We urge all drivers to slow down especially when road conditions are poor,” a garda spokesperson said.
“If you are stopped for a speeding offence, then you are liable to receive an €80 fine and three penalty points.”
When driving in wet conditions, drivers are reminded that it takes longer to stop a vehicle. So, slow down and allow extra distance between you and the vehicle in front. Special care should also be taken when driving behind goods vehicles as they generate a considerable amount of spray which reduces your visibility.
The Buncrana RPU also has the following advice for motorists: Be aware of the danger of aquaplaning especially on roads with speed limits of 100 km/h and 120 km/h; Check tyres and consider replacing them if the tread depth is below 3mm and use dipped headlights at all times of poor visibility to ensure you are seen by other motorists.

Calls are answered and logged by civilian personnel at the Garda Information Services Centre, Castlebar.
The reported incident is then forwarded to the relevant Garda Station for investigation.
