A world of opportunities can be opened up to teachers under the Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) Master’s programme in Computer Science Education Research.

This unique degree is offered from the Computing Department at LYIT to prepare learners for a career as a computer science educator at primary, post-primary and Further Education levels.

Teachers are equipped with material that will provide them with confidence and technical skills to deliver ICT in schools for the 21st Century.

Delivered over 2-3 years, the Level 9 programme provides the skills needed to create curriculum and instruct students in the areas of modern technologies, computer programming, security and technology ethics.

Course content for the MSc in Computer Science Education Research degree is research based and infuses best practices in computer science education.

The benefits of the programme include online delivery, allowing candidates to receive and submit coursework and interact with participants and lecturers via the Internet. In this way, busy professionals get the opportunity to complete their Master’s degree without having to leave their jobs or travel long distances.

Dr. Nigel McKelvey – Head of Flexible and Online Learning

Dr. Nigel McKelvey – Head of Flexible and Online Learning adds: “The programme has a 60 ECT credit dissertation associated with it, during this time, students gain skills in their academic writing, their research ability and to create a practical artefact based on their research. Combined, it makes for a fantastic suite of resources that you can use directly in your own classroom, upon completion of this Master’s.”

Dr Gertie Taggart, Head of Faculty of Engineering and Technology, says the LYIT’s transformation into a technological university with GMIT and IT Sligo has led to the development of a PhD programme of study in Computing.

“If you come in here as an undergraduate student, you can go right through to post-graduate PhD level right here at Letterkenny Institute of Technology. We are undergoing a very transformative process and I would be delighted if you would be part of that change with us at our faculty,” Dr Taggart said.
