Gardaí are being urged to step up patrols in Letterkenny following a spate of recent fires.
Councillor Gerry Mc Monagle is calling for more policing in the Gartan, Beechwood and Ard Colmcille areas after fires were started at Gartan Field and at a shed at the rear of a vacant house at Ard Colmcille.
Cllr Mc Monagle, who is Chairperson of the Joint Policing Committee, said the Fire Service were called to two fires over these last two evenings at Gartan Field and Ard Colmcille.
“Residents say they saw young lads running away after the fires were started,” said Cllr Mc Monagle.
Cllr Mc Monagle is also calling on parents to be more aware of where their children are playing and ensure that they are not involved in this type of behaviour.
“I would also call on the Gardai to step up their local patrols and become more visible in the area. This area is very heavily populated by elderly people and they need reassurance that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated. A few more Gardai and foot patrol will go along way to give them that reassurance.
“Finally I would ask the local youth of the area to act more responsibly and respect people’s property. I would also ask the local community to be more vigilant and look out for their neighbours and report any suspicious activity to the Gardai.”
