A Ballybofey dressmaker has sewn a niche in the market, sending her bespoke christening gowns around the world.

Bernie McGuire, owner of ‘Stitch it Bernie’ on Donegal Street, only launched her business five years ago.

However, with 32 years’ experience of dressmaking and alterations behind her, she decided to focus on designing her own collection of bespoke christening gowns.

Such is the popularity of her work, and becoming a member of Crafters of Ireland, she now has customers all around the globe.

“I combine traditional and modern outfits and I also design hats, bibs and shoes to provide my customers with a complete baptismal/christening outfit for their special celebration,” Bernie told Donegal Daily.

One of Bernie’s beautiful creations, the likes of which are in demand all around the world.

“I personalise these gowns to meet my customer’s needs. I also specialise in recreating gown/outfits from that cherished wedding dress to create heirlooms that will be passed from one generation to the next. I source the finest material here in Ireland, so you are getting the service that these memories deserve.”

Bernie is a highly skilled designer – her work is loved worldwide and that is not surprising as she loves what she does.

“I am never happier than when I am creating something beautiful from fabric, whether that is bespoke christening gowns available to ship worldwide or bridal alterations to a beautiful gown for a bride’s special day. One of my most popular services is the redesign of wedding or communion dress into a unique christening gown. This can be a very personal, and emotional experience, I have been privileged to be part of this beautiful ongoing story.”

Bernadette Clancy of Crafters of Ireland said they are delighted to have Bernie on board, and being able to showcase her work to a global audience.

“She kept focused during the lockdowns and expanded her service which has proven to be highly successful,” Ms Clancy said.

“She is all about bringing the very best to her customers and we are delighted for her and are so proud to have ‘Stitch It Bernie’ on board with us.”
