A call has been made for Donegal County Council to put portaloos at one of the county’s most iconic beaches.
Councillor Liam Blaney said the fact that beach-goers were being forced to undertake up to a four-mile ’round trip was simply not good enough.
He said that while there was already public toilets at one end of Portsalon beach under Knockalla, there was no such facility at Magherawarden.
He said he watched during the good weather of recent days while up to a thousand people visited the beach.
He said that while the car park was full and both sides of the road was lined with cars, there was no toilet facilities.
He said local businesses should not have to allow their toilets to be used as public toilets.
He added “People can’t go out foreign and are being asked to stay local and we should accommodate them.
“It is wrong to ask somebody to walk two miles to go to the toilet.
“If we did it on a pilot basis and we will see the need for toilets in this area and perhaps then they could be considered long-term.”
Cllr Blaney also requested more litter bins be put in the area.
A spokesperson for Donegal County Council said there were no plans for such portaloos but that the issue will be raised within the council for the need for a portaloo on a trial basis in the area.
Councillor Blaney’s motion was seconded by Councillor Ian McGarvey who said “All of you who know what it’s like to walk two miles know you might not make it.”
