Try-a-snorkel a huge success for Sheephaven Sub-aqua

Sheephaven SAC had a full schedule of club activities last week, starting with a Try-a-Snorkel in PortnaBlagh Harbour on Wednesday evening.

The event was led by Hugo Mc Fadden and he had ensured enough club members to provide an experienced snorkeler for everyone who turned up for the evening.

The event was blessed with the weather and proved to be so successful that a number of the new snorkelers said that they would be back on Sunday.

Over the June Bank Holiday Sheephaven divers had also had a full schedule, with dives on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

On Saturday morning John Joe Rowland led the dive party out from Downings Pier for an excellent dive in Skate Bay.

The chosen dive site was well sheltered from the swell driven by the slight westerly winds and provided water visibility of between 5m and 10m horizontally.

In-water temperatures at 10 degrees Celsius have at last got into double figures and made the 40 minute dives very comfortable indeed.

The warmer water has also brought back the big fish life, with plenty of Ballan Wrasse and Pollock to be seen.

A major feature of this site is a number of substantial caves opening out at the sea bed level of 20m, which go deep into the headland and are worth the dive in their own right.

In fact the site was so good that it visited again on both Sunday and Monday mornings, on both occasions leaving from PortnaBlagh pier.

Finally, Sheephaven SAC are delighted to announce the launch of their 50/50 Lottery Fund Raiser.

This is the culmination of a huge amount of work by Eileen Coll and Caroline Mc Gee and hopefully, it will get the support that their work deserves.

The proceeds from the Sheephaven 50/50 Lottery will go to fund the clubs Search and Recovery Unit, as the previous fundraising activities that were so well supported by the public have been restricted over the last year.

Sheephaven S&R is a community-based volunteer resource that is called upon by the State in the event of a person missing in the water, but we have to provide our own boats and equipment.

We appeal to any members of the public who wish to support the Sheephaven S&R Unit to go onto our Facebook page and follow the link to buy tickets, with the first draw due to take place on Sunday 20th June.
