Cutting down of trees has left residents “deafened” by traffic

The cutting down of a number of trees has left residents living along the busy Letterkenny to Manorcunningham Road deafened with the noise of traffic.

The claim was made at this week’s meeting of the Letterkenny/Milford Municipal Authority.

The issue was raised by Councillor Donal Kelly who said he had been approached by a number of residents about the issue.

It is understood the trees had acted as a natural sound barrier and this now needed to be replaced some way.

Councillor kelly proposed that the council contacted Transport Infrastructure Ireland to have a new sound barrier erected along the dual carriageway near houses.

“The residents who contacted me said there was always noise but that the trees acted as a sound barrier.

“However, now that the trees have been felled the noise has become unbearable for them,” said Councillor Kelly.

He was supported by Mayor Donal Coyle  who revealed that people in the area have been looking for a solution to the problem for up to 30 years.

However, the meeting was told that Donegal County Council has investigated the issue after engaging with Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

But because the Noise Action Plan of 2018 to 2023 had not been adopted by Donegal County Council, there was no funding for such a sound barrier.
