Gardaí in Letterkenny are ordering motorists to slow down and not put lives at risk this weekend.
While there is gridlock on Pearse Road and Letterkenny Main Street, other motorists have been clocked elsewhere speeding at alarming speeds of 170km/hr.
Four arrests were made in the Letterkenny District for the offence of dangerous driving so far today.
“Speed checks and checkpoints will continue throughout the night. Slow down!” said gardaí on Facebook.
There has been an influx of visitors to the Letterkenny and Buncrana districts this weekend, which is traditionally the weekend of the Donegal International Rally. The crowds, however, are not associated with the official event, as it is only being marked online this year due to the pandemic.
A high visibility policing operation is underway and gardaí are mounting patrols, speed checks and checkpoints across the region. Car inspections are being carried out in conjunction with the Road Safety Authority.
