MARK English achieved his two big career goals all in the space of one minutes and 45.71 seconds tonight.

Racing in Castelló, Spain English clocked the 1:45.71 to officially book his spot at the Olympic Games and break David Matthews’ long-standing Irish 800m record.

“I’m absolutely delighted,” the Finn Valley AC man told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.

“I’m absolutely thrilled. I don’t know where my head went, but I was absolutely delighted.

“I was confident that I could do it. I knew if I could do the first 400m in 50 seconds or so that I could do it.

“I wanted to do things before I finish up: Get the Olympics again and break the Irish record. It’s always been on my mind. It’s been a fantastic record.”

This was English’s fifth world class run over the last 16 days – and he saved the best wine for last.

He said: “I’m ready to go out to Tokyo now and enjoy the experience.”
