A controversial steel barrier at one of Donegal’s most popular villages has been forcefully removed.
The steel barrier was erected approximately a month ago at the pier in Dunfanaghy.
However, the barrier was forcefully removed used cutting equipment last night.
The barrier was put up by some locals who complained that too many campervans were using the pier to park on.
The move sparked a backlash from campervan owners who said they planned to boycott the seaside village and bring their custom elsewhere.
It is also believed that many locals have no issue with the camper vans coming into the town and using the pier.
Now an investigation has been launched after a tool was used to cut through the steel poles of the barrier causing it to fall.
Our exclusive pictures show the scene today after the barrier was cut down overnight.
A Garda spokesperson said they are investigating the incident.
A spokesperson said “Gardaí are investigating an incident of criminal damage that occurred in the early hours of Thursday, 1st July, 2021, at The Pier, Market Square, in Dunfanaghy, County Donegal.
“No arrests have been made to date in relation to this incident.”
A meeting was held last week to discuss ongoing issues in the town including the closure of public toilets at night.
