Donegal man gets letter from Pope for court defence

July 4, 2021

A DONEGAL man has submitted a letter to court from Pope Francis as part of his legal defence.

Kim McMenamin faces a charge of dangerous driving in relation to an incident on March 10, 2021.

The case of Mr McMenamin (50), of Millfield Heights, Buncrana, was before this week’s sitting of Letterkenny District Court.

McMemanin is charged with alleged dangerous driving at Drumnahoagh, Port Road, Letterkenny.

A document, headed ‘Apostolic Letter’ and claiming to be issued ‘of the Supreme Pontiff Francis’ was received by the court.

“I presume this isn’t from the Pope,” Judge Alan Mitchell said.

Garda Sergeant Jim Collins added: “We’re highly honoured to have the letter.”

The matter was adjourned to the October 21 sitting of the court for hearing.
