Long roadside grass is upsetting motorists in south Donegal

The lack of grass cutting along road verges is causing a ‘lot of upset’ in south Donegal, a local councillor has claimed.

Cllr Niamh Kennedy was speaking at this morning’s meeting of the Donegal Municipal District (MD).

“High grass on verges is causing a lot of upset,” she said.

“People are afraid to drive on to the verge as they don’t know what’s underneath, this is a particular issue for tourists. I know we’re not supposed to be cutting hedges at this time of year, but this is a big issue with people.”

Cllr Michael Naughton agreed, adding that safety has to be a priority.

“We are not talking about hedge cutting here, the grass is growing wild along the roads,” he said.

Donegal County Council’s Area Manager for Roads, Mr Mark Sweeney, assorted councillors that they have commenced grass cutting in certain areas.

“This is always an issue at this time of year,” he said.

We have already started cutting roadside grass on the N56 and in the Killybegs area and at Teelin and in Glen where visibility is low.”
