Independent TD for Donegal Thomas Pringle has hit out at today’s government decision to waive pre-legislative scrutiny of the new laws on indoor dining.
Deputy Pringle said it is not “proper democracy” if debate on important bills is limited.
Addressing the Dáil today, Deputy Pringle objected to this week’s Order of Business, “particularly in relation to the health amendment bill. As has been said, we’re not getting enough time to debate this.”
He said the climate action bill coming before the Dáil this week was another example – it has also been ‘guillotined’, leaving little time for debate.
The deputy said in the run-up to the summer recess, “all this legislation has to be rushed through, and it’s not proper democracy, it’s not proper for the parliament, and I think we have to oppose it.”
Deputy Pringle said: “It shouldn’t be allowed to continue, but of course the Government will continue with it. That’s the reality of the situation and we will continue to oppose it as they do.”
