Donegal County Council is not recommending any change to planning restrictions to allow families in Letterkenny to build outside the town.
A call was made this week by Cllr Michael McBride to have policies updated.
Cllr McBride told the Letterkenny-Milford MD that times have changed since housing policies were set, and now people are “combing the town boundaries for looking for sites that they simply can’t get.”
“We don’t have serviced sites that people can buy to move up to three or four bedroom houses,” the meeting heard.
Cllr McBride said the council has to “move with the times” and that they should seriously consider reviewing current policies so that families can upsize or downsize homes and access schools.
The current policy framework was set out to meet “the genuine local rural housing need of the rural communities from those areas,” the council said.
The response from the executive said that is it is not recommend that the current policy approach is changed. This matter will come up for further review during the formal review of the current County Development Plan 2018 – to 2024, which is due to commence next year.
