As the roads become busy again, Gardaí in Donegal are urging road users to slow down and never drink or take drugs and drive.
The number of road fatalities in Ireland reached 99 at midnight last night. Yesterday, a motorcyclist in his 70s was killed in a collision in Co Kildare, and a man in his 40s was killed in a single-vehicle collision in Tipperary.
Of the 99 people, drivers accounted for 56 fatalities, 11 passengers have died, as well as 16 motorcyclists and 11 pedestrians.
August was a traumatic and disastrous month on Irish roads, said Donegal Garda Sergeant Paul Wallace. Twenty four people lost their lives on the roads this past month alone.
Sgt Wallace is urging people to slow down and keep within speed limits.
“The limits are there for a reason and they are not a target to achieve,” he said.
He also called for extra caution on the roads, with an increase in campervans and summer traffic.
The Letterkenny district has recorded a notable increase in drink driving detections over the past two weeks, Sgt Wallace reports, and he has appealed to people to have designated drivers or take taxis if drinking.
